LANSING, Mich. — After Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey and House Speaker Lee Chatfield on Wednesday announced a joint legislative lawsuit against Gov. Gretchen Whitmer for failing to comply with existing state law and disregarding the Michigan Constitution, Sen. Ruth Johnson, R-Holly, issued the following statement:
“The constitution doesn’t fly out the window because of our current challenges; that is an incredibly dangerous precedent and goes against the very principles on which our country was founded. Limiting the role of the Legislature also limits the input of the public in making many important decisions that greatly affect their daily lives.
“The governor cannot be both executive and lawmaker simultaneously. There are three branches of government, and they are all needed to ensure appropriate checks and balances.
“People’s elected representatives cannot be sidelined indefinitely at the whim of the governor.
“This lawsuit is an important step in restoring the people’s voice in the Capitol.”
